How to Prepare for a Federal Police Test

What do you want to be when you grow up? It’s a question every child is asked. Some want to be princesses. Some want to be astronauts. And some want to be policemen and policewomen. For those who fall into this third category, you’ll need to go through rigorous testing before you can join the Australian Federal Police (AFP). To help get you there, Paragon Corporate Training (PCT) are here. Read on to find out what’s required from you and how PCT can be of assistance.

Want to Join the Australian Federal Police?

We all know what police officers do - they make sure everyone is following the law. Specifically though, police officers working for the AFP are responsible for policing federal law in all states and territories. But before you can apply, you need to make sure you’re eligible by meeting the following criteria:

  • Be of sound character
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold Australian citizenship
  • Have Year 12 education or Year 10 with a trade certificate
  • Hold a full, unrestricted manual vehicle drivers license
  • Be able to satisfy medical and fitness requirements
  • Complete the Employment Suitability Questionnaire
  • Provide a copy of your current traffic history

Once your application has been accepted, you’ll go through a selection process that includes written testing, physical testing, and testing designed to determine whether you have the mental and emotional fortitude required to be an effective member of a law enforcement team. The recruitment process involves:

  1. Submitting an online application
  2. Meeting required benchmarks in the ability and psychometric testing
  3. Undertaking a fitness test
  4. Successfully completing the preliminary interview
  5. Successfully completing a medical and psychological assessment
  6. Attending the Entry Recruit Assessment Centre
  7. Attend training and successfully graduating

PCT are here to help you prepare for Step 2 - psychometric testing.

Have you Prepared for Federal Testing?

Once your online application has been successful, you’ll be invited to participate in the AFP testing centre process. At this session you’ll be required to complete online testing in a supervised group environment. The type of assessment you’ll undertake relates to literacy, numeracy, abstract reasoning and emotional intelligence.

It’s vital that you learn as much as possible about these tests prior to taking them. Not only will you be competing against perhaps hundreds of other applicants, you’ll be intentionally placed under increased stress so that recruiters may guage the way you react when under pressure.

You’ll be required to achieve the minimum benchmarks on each assessment before progressing to the next stage of the selection process.
