Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

PSP40416 Cert IV in Government Investigations

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is defined as:
‘An assessment process that assesses an individual’s formal, non-formal and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning outcomes, competency outcomes, or standards for entry to, and/or partial or total completion of, a VET qualification’

RPL assessment means that people can be assessed against a benchmark without having to undergo formal training. This will save time and resources in training, and give people recognition for competencies they have achieved. The RPL process is particularly useful for mature-age jobseekers or existing workers with accumulated life and work experiences.

The Paragon Model for RPL Paragon RPL assessments need to be rigorous, this is to ensure that we can adequately assess your skills and knowledge against the set benchmarks.
Many different models or processes of assessing for prior learning have been developed over the years, however the fundamental point in any model is that we still need to gather quality evidence according to the principles of assessment and rules of evidence, support you as the candidate, and make a decision against a pre-determined benchmark.

At Paragon we have adopted an easy to follow model;

Once you have had your initial interview with us to express your interest in RPL, if you are happy to proceed with an application you will pay a $250 (non-refundable) application fee. From there, you will be provided with an RPL Kit, which requires you as the candidate to supply evidence against your claim of competence. Once you have completed your kit and compiled a portfolio of evidence you will need to submit this for a desktop assessment of that evidence by our assessors. Our assessors will look at your documentation and make a determination as to whether or not RPL is a viable option for you based on what you have provided. At this point, you will be advised on the recommendation from our assessor/assessment team and if you choose to proceed you will be charged the full RPL fees, after which payment has been made we will conduct verbal interviews and arrange for you to participate in a practical demonstration.

Generally speaking, after you have participated in a practical demonstration a decision can be made as to your competency, however, each individual is different and it may be necessary to undertake further or different assessments depending on your circumstance.
