How To Become A Government Investigator In Australia

12-Apr-2023

The role of a government investigator is critical in administering and regulating legislation relevant to the government agency or statutory authority for which they may be working.

For example: Dept of Primary Industry and Regional Development (DPIRD) regulate laws (legislation) such as the Biodiversity & Management Act & Fish Resources Management Act.  RSPCA regulate the Animal Welfare Act. The Dept of Health regulates the Food Act.  So, you can see the context of investigations within the government may be quite diverse.

Government investigators play a crucial role in investigating and solving various types of cases, including, but not limited to,  fraud, corruption, organised crime, and other criminal activities. Government investigators may investigate ‘misconduct’ issues, where the rules of evidence don’t apply, and the focus of the investigation is different to that of a criminal investigation, such as breaches of codes of conduct and ethical issues, such as conflicts of interest, sexual harassment and the like.

If you aspire to become a government investigator in Australia, here’s a comprehensive guide on how you can pursue your career in this field with the help of Paragon Corporate Training.

Building a strong foundation of knowledge and skills will lay the groundwork for your future career as a government investigator.

Step 2: Gain Relevant Work Experience

Gaining relevant work experience is crucial to becoming a skilled government investigator in Australia. It’s important to start building your professional experience early on by seeking internships, volunteering, or working in related fields such as law enforcement, security, or investigative agencies. This will provide you with valuable practical experience and exposure to real-world scenarios, which can enhance your skills and knowledge.

Working in related fields can also help you network with professionals in the field and gain insights into the job requirements and expectations. Government investigator positions are often competitive, and having relevant work experience on your resume can give you an edge over other candidates.

Similar to beginning any new role, it can be challenging acquiring experience. However, the more experience you acquire the easier it will become and the more demand for your services you will discover.

Step 3: Meet the Eligibility Criteria

To become a government investigator in Australia, you must meet the eligibility criteria set by the relevant government agency or organisation This may include meeting age requirements, passing a thorough background check, and obtaining necessary certifications or licences, such as a driver’s licence, or security clearance.

If you have completed your training with Paragon Corporate Training, we require ID and proof of age for all of our courses. Additionally, students must be confident in English speaking, otherwise they may struggle with the demands of the course. It’s important to carefully review and understand the eligibility criteria of the organisation you wish to work for and ensure that you meet all the requirements.

Step 4: Apply for Government Investigator Positions

Once you have gained the necessary education, skills, and work experience, you can start applying for government investigator positions in Australia. The selection process may vary depending on the organisation and the specific position you are applying for. It’s important to be prepared and demonstrate your suitability for the role through your knowledge, skills, and experience.  Do your research on the organisation that you are seeking a position with.  What is the agency’s mission statement?  What are the strategic intents?  What is the role of the agency?
