If you are looking to work in the construction industry in Australia, one of the most important things you need to have is a White Card (also known as a construction induction card). This is a mandatory requirement for anyone who wants to work in construction, and the certification must be acquired before the employee commences work.

From site managers, supervisors, surveyors, labourers and tradespeople, having a White Card serves as proof that you have undergone training in the General Construction Induction course/White Card course (formerly referred to as the Blue Card, Red Card, or Green Card course, depending on your state in Australia). Once a White Card is obtained, it will provide opportunities of work throughout the construction industry.

Whether you’re completely new to the industry or familiar with the industry’s workings—here we provide the most efficient and cost-effective approach to obtaining your White Card. Follow the steps below and if you have any questions along the way, reach out to our friendly team.

Step 1: Eligibility criteria

The first step to obtaining a White Card is to understand the initial requirements. If you fail to meet the basic requirements you might not be able to complete or even enter the course. Familiarise yourself with the list below to ensure you’re eligible.

    • Person must be over 15 years of age to participate in the training.
    • ID/proof of age will be required to confirm age and identity of applicant. *Ensure you bring this along to your course
  • YOUR SPOKEN & WRITTEN ENGLISH MUST BE AT A SUITABLE LEVEL TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WHITE CARD COURSE.
  • If your English is not at a suitable level, you will not be able to do the white card, as it is a key requirement within the training package that you know the English words for PPE, tools and equipment, example, ladder, scaffolding, harness, safety boots, respirator, evacuation plans, etc.

For White Cards, there is only a basic level of prerequisites, no prior study is required under WA laws. Other States in Australia might have additional requirements. This course is a compulsory entry requirement for all individuals looking to get their foot in the door within the construction industry.

Step 2: Choose an accredited RTO

The next step is to choose an accredited Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that offers the construction induction training course/White Card course.

Paragon Corporate Training offers accredited construction induction training courses both in-person and online that are accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA). Both forms of training provide everything you need to be fully qualified and recognised by the State.

It’s important to note that not every State in Australia offers training in-person and online. Only Perth and Tasmania offer accredited online training for White Cards.

Step 3: Enrol in the course

Once you have chosen an accredited RTO, it’s time to enrol in the course.

At Paragon Training, booking isn’t mandatory. You can choose to book online via our website or, simply arrive on the day 5 minutes prior to the course start time. Monday to Friday, courses run twice a day starting at either 9am or 1pm.

All you need to bring along with you is your ID, a pen and an enthusiasm to learn!

Step 4: Complete the course

After you have enrolled in the course, the next step is to complete the training. The White Card course covers a range of topics, including occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements, risk management, and common hazards in the construction industry. The course can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to complete, depending on the size and capabilities of the classroom.

At Paragon Training there is a short safety video and open book questionnaire to complete. Our teachers will guide you through the process, ensuring you feel confident to complete the final stages with ease. Once the course is complete, you will receive your card and certificate.

Step 5: Pay for the course

Here at Paragon Corporate Training, we offer a range of payment options to accommodate.

For the classroom course, you can pay when you arrive on the day. White Card courses are charged at the competitive price of $98.

Additionally, you will need to send a photo of yourself wearing protective equipment (hard hat, hi-vis vest or shirt, earplugs or ear muffs and eye protection) to demonstrate your use of Personal Protective Equipment.
